I was passing through London and needed somewhere to stay near Sadlers Wells Theatre. I found Tommy Miah's Raj Hotel on line. All the staff were very friendly, extremely helpful and always smiling, despite the endless rain that night. My room was warm, comfortable and had everything I needed. Breakfast was plentiful including pancakes and crumpets to toast as well as a full continental breakfast. This hotel is a little 'jewel ' to find in Islington, convenient for buses and underground into central London with the warmest welcome awaiting you. I will definitely stay there again if I need accommodation in London.

Let me say first that the staff was great and we couldn't fault them. Unfortunate the room was not as good. When we got to the hotel it looked quite modern and we were hopeful. We were then led down a back stairway and through a maze of underground doors and passages that smelled strongly of damp to our door which the man showing us the way even had trouble opening. The room itself seemed clean although it to smelled badly of damp. We had asked forvtwin beds which we had but due to the size and layout of the room they had been pushed together which kind of ruined the whole point of having them. We made the best of it though and set off to find our way upstairs for an evening meal. Two wrong turns down now dark coridoors (as the lights seemed to be motion activated and the sensor was only on the way in) we found our way out. The food was great and the service good and the prices reasonable. I would probably eat there again if in the area. Back to the room we settled in for the night. There was a kettle for drinks but the only plug socket was at floor level so I had to be careful using it. The bathroom had dirty marks on the inside of the door, a bad smell all of its own and a roach trap in the corner. It also had another door built into the tiles with a big keyhole opposite the loo which had us wondering all night over what was on the other side. If the loud noises throughout the night coming from in ther were anything to go by it had something to do with the water for all of the surrounding rooms. During the night we were woken repeatedly by people slamming doors and talking as they past our room, and once by someone rattling our door. As two women traveling alone we didn't feel very safe. Also the room was uncomfortably warm and there was no air conditioning unit only two plug in heaters. We made it through the night, both with little sleep, my friend who slept nearist the corner said she heard water running by her for most of the night as when someone flushes a toilet. We were glad to get up and go for breakfast taking everything with us so that we wouldn't have to try and find our room again. There was a cold selection of foods and a toaster and watered down juice with tea and coffee in push button decanters. I had hoped for at least the option of a cooked breakfast but it was not to be. As this was a budget hotel and after reading previous reviews we hadn't expected the hotel to be perfect but we had hoped to get a decent nights sleep. This was not possible here. In future we will be paying more for somewhere a bit better.

We stayed in one of the budget basement rooms after a night out. It was good value for money! Although it smelt a bit musty when we arrived, this disappeared after switching the heater on and leaving the door open for a bit. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Would stay here again, but is definitely a no-frills cheap and cheerful option.

The rooms are clean and basic with modern en suite. Ideally located on Essex Road to reach Islington or Holloway Road locations. Walking distance from Emirates football stadium which is also why we stay here. Highly recommended

I booked a room for 3 people and we slept in a basement bedroom, which had little light, was extremely small, had no fridge, no hair dryer and there was some vermin poison in a bax under the bed. The bathroom was tiny and did not have a bath. There was no reception area as such, just a desk and a switchboard operative. The breakfast was acceptable without offering much in the way of variety. The staff were pleasant and polite. Our bedroom was very noisy with it being underneath the reception/dining room area and in rooms close by doors were banged loudly quite late at night.

7 night stay. 2 italian friends in a triple room on the basement below ground floor. Nothing to complain about, except: -lack of wardrobes -the soap was diluted with water -we found two beetles in the bathroom -window overlooking a not-goodlooking yard Positive aspects: -friendly staff -24h reception -average continental breakfast -10min walk to the overground -pretty clean (except for the beetles)

I was sharing a twin budget room with my mother in law in the basement, room L7. I thought the room was very clean and well maintained. However getting to the room left me less than impressed. Went past at least 3 young men sitting on the main floor space with myself and mother in law negotiating our way around their shoes and towels/sheets with luggage. Then there is the breakfast room/restaurant. We could hear every person moving and sliding their chairs from our bedroom, which meant no lie in for us. We recommended at end of our stay that they invest in some sticky pads for the end of the chair legs to cushion the noise. But the most irritating thing of all was the women(staff member) who checked us out of the hotel, she remained on her iphone to her friend/family the entire time when I sought assistance to get my mother in law out of the elevator. After this we tried to express our concerns over the noise level we endured while staying there. This women just said 'next time we come down I talk to manager and I give you discount, no problem'. She also stated that they had, had complaints about this before. This women although I am sure very nice, couldn't get us away quick enough. She then when back to speaking to her friend on what looked like a Skype call. I couldn't help notice that she was like that with other customers as we were leaving. I was very disappointed by this level of service as regardless if I was in a budget room I paid £195.00 so I expect when I ask simple questions or want to complain about something, then I get the staff members full attention. I noted throughout my stay this member of staff was constantly giving greater priority to her personal phone calls than the needs of paying guests. This was evident when I tried to ask her about the toilet fan in our room. However in saying that I would stay again due to the location and cleanliness of the rooms. I am coming down a further 2 more times in the next 6 weeks and hope that when I book and stay again, the service may be better. I will also wait and see if the woman who promised to give me a discount on next visit stays true to her word.

Prize: 200 GBP for 2 nights Room is slightly worn down & not very spacious. Bed was OK - bathroom was very small Hairdryer was only available at reception. Key lowlight was that room had not been made up despite early leave, which is for the prize asked not acceptable (if it was cheap I would not care). Except a sorry no compensation what so ever. Breakfast was not very impressive and was in prize inlcuded. Could not be excluded. Second day skipped the breakfast with no regret. Key point is seriously overprized, even for London. Would not recommend unless good reduction (Iess than 100 GBP for 2 nights)

The room was half the size that the picture showed on the website, had poor decoration (again, very different from what is showed on the website), the window didn't lock properly and it was really hard to try to open or close it, no proper ventilation in the room (the weather was unpleasantly warm and it was impossible to get some fresh air inside the room), the shower stall was ridiculously small, there were no hand towels available,
