History of the site

It was the third Duke of Montrose (1755-1836) who planted the east side of Loch Lomond with Oakwood trees. It is difficult to imagine today but this tranquil forest was once an industrial site where every spring women and children coppicing trees and stripping their bark. Workers distilled pyroligneous acid from the wood, and used it to fix dyes in the great textile factories of the Vale of Leven.

Now you can enjoy the popular and picturesque woodland site which is ideal for families, walkers and those wanting to experience a short outdoor break in the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.

I was so glad to reach this campsite after a long ol' day and I wasn't disappointed by its views of Loch Lomond. I'd recommend the lochside camping pitches any day. The warden was lovely and informative. The facilities which consist of compost loos and sinks to get water from are spotless! It was nice to see clean compost loos and that this site looks after its environment. It's recommended to book ( I think it's mandatory). Sitting on the gravel beach with my jet boil and camp food looking up to the starry skies was a perfect way to end a long tiring day. Waking up to glass like waters and clear skies was magnificent! I didn't want to leave and I will be back again... The only downside is the lochside camping pitches can be a challenge to get your tent pegs in the ground, as it's hard concrete. I found myself having to move my tent around until I found some softer ground, it took a while and nearly went dark.

We stayed for two nights at one of the loch-side pitches. The view from the front of the tent was amazing and you feel like you've got your own private bit of beach. Great for a late night barbecue or campfire in the fire pit. It'd been raining constantly on the run up to our stay so we were a wee bit worried we were going to turn up to a boggy pitch area but, it was absolutely fine. Being on the West Highland Way we also had worries that a constant stream of walkers might be disruptive but again it was absolutely fine. The path for that runs behind the pitches so you barely notice them as you soak in the scenery and the walkers are few and far between once it hits about 5pm. Having never used an eco-toilet it was better than I expected (no smell!) but be aware there's no sink for washing in the toilets. There's antibacterial gel for cleaning the hands but if you're dirty and muddy the best you can do is a quick rinse in the communal dish washing area. That being said, we knew when booking the only facilities were eco-toilets, drinking water and a dish washing area. Didn't phase myself but I'd pack some wipes if you're overly concerned about keeping clean. The wardens on-site were both helpful and friendly, the grass pitching area it looked well maintained and well drained and there's plenty of walking opportunities being on the West Highland Way. The weather was a bit too bad for us to try it this time round but next visit we'll be giving the Sallochy forest trails a go!

A simplistic site with only a potwash area and composting toilets. Still a great retreat from modern life with views across the loch towards Luss. Wardens are helpful with any problems. Can get a little boggy in heavy rain but still wouldn't change it. Highly recommended.

The campsite is small and TENTS ONLY making this really quiet compared to the big sites further down the Loch. The staff were lovely and helpful and the loch-side pitches had a really great view out over the loch. Dont expect showers, hot water or a site shop - this is back to basics camping, but the site is clean, tidy, well maintained and in an idyllic location. Pre-book a firepit, as these are brilliant for sitting around in the evening / nighttime, and toasting your marshmallows! Log bags are good for around 3 hours of burning. I'm glad we were on the loch-side hard-standing pitches and not the main grassy field area, as that area was a little bit boggy in places, and would benefit from some improved drainage / levelling if at all possible. A few of ideas for improvement of the site: a) Provide a basic on-site camp shop for essential supplies geared towards walkers who dont have the luxury of a car to get to Balmaha (blister packs, disposable BBQ, matches, trangia fuel, Smidge, rolls, burgers, sausages, batteries etc) - could be opened just at set times throughout the day. b) Solar charging point for phones c) Provide better segregation for rubbish to encourage recycling. d) Dont allow the use of gazebos on site, as these look terrible! e) Limit the number of dogs on site (max 1 per pitch) f) Provide a climbing / adventure area for kids

We picked this campsite based on the fact it was slightly more of a wild camping experience. It was one of the most beautiful sites we've ever visited. Traveling all the way from London was worth every mile to enjoy such an amazing view. The staff or wardens were all lovely and friendly and couldn't have been any more helpful. We even wanted to stay another couple of nights. We are home now well rested with some amazing memories. So thank you very much and we shall be returning.

I promised to take my kids wild-camping. Sallochy campsite was the perfect site for them to have a taster to how this would be with a beautiful pitch right on the lochside and in amongst the trees. The site wardens were all very friendly. The composting toilets were well maintained although I wouldn't advise looking down when you use them. I hired a firepit for the two nights and was loaned a wheelbarrow so I didn't have to carry it to my pitch. Both me and the kids can't wait to go back to this site next year.

An excellent campsite! The view from our lochside pitch was absolutely stunning! The location of the campsite is also ideal - there are lots of activities, attractions, restaurants, etc. nearby. The park rangers were also really helpful. We called ahead and asked if they could leave a fire pit out for us as we didn't think we would make it in time before they left for the night. They explained that they were unable to do this as they needed a deposit, etc. However, they stayed 20 minutes after they were meant to leave to make sure we got one. Excellent customer service!

It is a beautiful spot in the woods. The place is well maintained, has tables, parking places, sink for dishes and a compost toilet. It does not have showers which seem to be to basic for some people. It is however clean and the staff there is friendly. The lake spots are very beautiful and have room between them so you have your own place. The places on the main place are similar to normal camping. Most were used by families.

Arrived there to a very friendly welcome and had everything explained and was given the brochure. I camped in the centre but there is 10 spaces by the lakeside. The scenery is amazing even just from the campsite. The toilets are different with them not being the flushing type but didn't bother us. You can hire a fire pit and buy wood for it at the office on site. The campsite is quite basic but that's what we were wanting from it. It's close to Ben Lomond which was a hard walk but worth it for the views. There's a shop, cafe, pub serving food and visitor centre just 10 minutes down the road from the camp. We spent a lovely 3 days at the site which is the most you can stay but was never short of places to go and we packed a lot into the 3 days. Would highly recommend

What a beautiful place to camp and to recharge. Everything was at hand, clean toilets, secure parking, fresh water and much information on things to do during your stay. Helen the warden was friendly and a delight. I have been before with others but this time I went on my own and I will go back again on my own because the peace I received was 100%.

Not really the fault of the camp site but the ground was so muddy when we arrived. We tried to find the firmest area to pitch our tent but the amount of rain we had I'm surprised we didn't float into the lake! We ended only staying one night as my tent got ruined with the rain and the mud. I think £7 per person per night for a sight that's pretty basic with no proper drainage is pretty expensive.

A lovely campsite with an amazing view of Loch Lomond. We stayed 3 nights in a mixture of weather and loved it. Ground was very muddy and we could see every new arrival struggling to find a good spot. Nice that you get to pick your own spot though. Hired a fire pit and bought logs on site, we even managed to cook tea over the fire. One issue with a noisy neighbour up till 2am, but apart from that a lovely stay. The composting toilets may look like real toilets but were still an experience I'd rather not do again! A few good walks from the site itself, along the loch or up the hill for an amazing view of the loch. Public car park around the campsite which isn't ideal but the small beach on the lochside was beautiful, especially at night to get a clear view of the stars! I would recommend this site for 'wild campers' and hikers. Would use again in future.

Loch side pitches give you a taste of wild camping in a beautiful setting. They are not too far from car park but secluded enough. Toilet and washing facilities good, could do with a shower.
